Paper mills are a common source of industrial wastewater. They are also among the most harmful sources of industrial wastewater, as the papermaking process involves the use of vast quantities of water. Every tonne of paper produced consumes 300 cubic metres of water. Consequently, failure to treat the wastewater promptly can cause significant damage to water quality. Paper mill effluent contains several harmful pollutants, including carbohydrates, fibres, COD, BOD, toxic substances, colour, and radioactive contaminants; therefore, the effective removal of colour from the wastewater is particularly important in paper mills.
